Empowering Women 2022

Empowering the women of South Africa

During the month of August, it is our responsibility to honour the women who came before us – and all the ones who will be trailblazers after us. As a woman, confidently ask what you want in your career as well as your personal life. Celebrating being a woman also means to practice receiving by saying yes to opportunities aligned with you and unapologetically pursue your dreams.

This month is devoted to celebrating the achievements of women and seeking gender equality. Today, National Women’s Month in South Africa is celebrated by drawing attention to many of the important issues that women in South Africa, and across the world, still face.

Gender equality not only refers to issues such as equal pay and equal opportunities but also to the way an individual is treated in social, institutional, and other settings. So, what are some things you can do to celebrate Women’s Month and help conquer gender-based inequality? You may find webinars and conferences dedicated to this, and there are also many free online resources, books, and more.

You can sign up for diversity education events held by marginalised people or implement them into your workplace, share content from people who experience gender injustice, boost information that pertains to the fight for equal rights, and so on. It is also very important to make your values known, because making your values known that relate to gender equality can have more of an impact than you think.

Show up as an advocate for other women. Amplify the voices, change the systems and policies, share the stories, and show up as allies and advocates for other women. Another inspiring way to celebrate women is by creating opportunities to mentor women. Buy from female-owned businesses, any amount of money spent supporting women counts.

Finding Work-life balance

One of the biggest struggles for women in the workforce is finding work-life balance, but the good news is, that it can be attainable and sustainable. Instead of trying to have it all, decide what is important to you and let the rest go. Successful women know how to prioritize what matters and to let go of what doesn’t. No one is served well when you are running on empty, taking care of yourself is part of taking care of others.

Set manageable goals each day, being able to meet priorities helps us feel a sense of accomplishment and control. Systemic issues impact the way everyone works. Employees of all genders and backgrounds deserve to feel respected and valued. All in all, there are lots of proactive ways you can improve your work-life balance.

A small research review found that self-care can prevent and treat anxiety and depression. While any job can be stressful, it can make your day-to-day a lot more enjoyable if you like what you do, it is an important question to ask yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for being honest with yourself.

Positive changes also shouldn’t land all on an employee’s shoulders. Some obstacles that affect workers are just above and beyond what individuals can control.

Ultimately, work-life balance is all about the magical idea of having enough time to succeed in your career while still enjoying your life. Many employees could also benefit from the opportunity to work from home.
